Illusive speed

Make friends or die
April 21, 2009
I don’t have a lot of friends. I’m not complaining, I know a lot of people, I just don’t maintain friendships particularly well. And now, according to this article this lack of friends is a health risk. I exercise alone, I stand alone in the other room while everyone enjoys dessert, and now I find out that I should be a fat and happy social butterfly if I want a long and healthy life.
Why didn’t someone tell me this ten years ago?
Would anyone like to be my friend and go get some cake?

And with great might we proceed
September 1, 2008
Tonight I gathered together with all seven of my siblings to celebrate labor day.
This is a holiday that means different things to different people. For most it’s about cooking meat outside and not going to work. For my family labor day has always been significant because our great uncle fought in the labor wars this holiday was created to celebrate.
I didn’t know this was an unappreciated holiday until I was in high school and I had my first job. A co-worker was taking about how funny it is that labor day is all about having the day off and getting along weekend. I thought he was making a joke and then I realized everyone was agreeing with him. I couldn’t say anything. Even though I wanted to explain all that labor day truly meant. I was stunned into silence.
It just seems absurd to me that so many people can take advantage of this holiday without knowing about the men who suffered, fought, and carried on for four days to ensure that all those who engage in any form of labor will have the right to describe their work as labor. Every year my family would gather together and gaze upon the scar on my great uncle’s elbow and make him tell us the story of how he saved a dozen lives in his fight for the rights of laborers. And sure, we grilled meat and the adults drunk and everyone had fun but it was all done with extreme reverence.

Aphorisms, while often
misused and unhelpful
can contain within
them a great deal
of wisdom. I think
I read that somewhere. Or
maybe I overheard it. All I
know is aphorisms are just
advice you’re tricked into
listening to.
